Although the excellent combat of Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition remains as enticing as ever, the various troubles that plagued the original release (sloppy camera, lazy backtracking), only feel more egregious this time around.

Ken McKown writes: Capcom has found a new love in remastering older titles for the HD age. Their latest entry is the polarizing Devil May Cry 4. The fourth entry in the series was the last developed by Capcoms Japanese team, and featured a brand new character named Nero. It was mostly polarized due to the fact that the game was broken into two sections, one with Nero, and one with Dante, but Dantes missions were basically retreading what Nero had already done. Still the combat was great and the bosses imaginative, and I remember having a blast with it. This new version shines up the visuals, as well as adding a ton of new content to play around with.

GR:
"The original Devil May Cry 4 feels like half a game. Once you reach the midpoint of its 20 missions as the blade-wielding, gun-toting, demon-armed Nero, you fight back through the same locations as usual series hero, Dante. I expected to feel short-changed by this recursive structure, but in a series all about the art of killing, the addition of three extra playable characters in this new-gen Special Edition adds a bit of spice. Whats more, the ferocious combat system - now running at an immediate and satisfying 60 FPS - ensures makes the re-release is somewhat worthwhile in spite of some tedious, outdated level design."
